I started my blog and business as a way to help merge all of my current passions, both personally and professionally. Professionally I have worked as a teacher, completed my Masters in Counselling and have worked counselling youth and families. Personally I have been married for 14 years and have 5 boys, aged 11, 10, 8 and 2, and 8 months. Before we had our 4th son we also had a daughter who tragically passed away aged 4 and a half months. Whilst this has been devastating and grief is a very complex and personal experience, I am hopeful that my experience will help others who have suffered loss of any kind or struggle with any aspects at all to do with family life and parenting. I am by no means the perfect parent and likewise my children are by no means perfect. In saying that however, I think it is imperitive that people recognise what is important to them for themselves, their family life and their childrens future and parent accordingly. I have a clear vision of how I want my family life to be and what my aspirations are for my childrens future. A combination of my own upbringing, the positive role models that have always surrounded me, my professional training and a myriad of personal experiences have all enabled me to thus far create happy and resilient children who I am hopeful will grow into happy and resilient adults.
The Modern Parent is a response to the growing frustration parents and consequently adolescents are experiencing as they try to wade through the quagmire of increasingly complex issues that face us all as we strive for a healthy and happy family life. Raising a family these days can sometimes appear to be complicated, daunting and overwhelming…..but it needn’t be! (Well not for the most part anyway). Hopefully together we can learn to strip parenting back to the basics, to take advice when advice is warranted, to seek support when it is needed and to trust our instincts when they are all that we require. Through my professional training as a teacher and counsellor and through my everyday experiences as a mother of four, I will share with you all that I have to offer and of course learn from my readers all that they have to offer me.
