5 ways to a more organised and stress free household

As the new year gets into full swing,  the holidays come to an end, little ones start out at playgroups, kindergarten, schools or high school (or in my case all of the above), we start thinking about the organised and smooth sailing ship we are going to steer out of the somewhat bumpy and treacherous conditions of years or months gone by.

I have recently had quite a few emails asking me how I manage to stay organised, remain appear in control and fit everything in, whist keeping a busy household of 7 ticking along.

Firstly let me say, it is not always organised (teachers reading this will know I have lost the odd excursion notice or forgotten the time of a training session) and I am not always completely calm and in control (my kids will vouch for this).  I do think however, to get through many of the things I set out for myself, time and experience have taught me a thing or two about keeping it all moving along with minimal stress.

To help remind myself, and to help any of you a little apprehensive about how to tackle the year ahead, I have outlined some of the things I attempt to do regularly to ensure a greater chance of remaining sane and relatively calm whilst still achieving all some of what I need.

Morning Walk/Exercise

Luckily for me, I am able to get up early before the rest of the house and go on a quick walk before my husband leaves for work. This is the time I go over in my head what needs to be accomplished that day and the order I will do it all in (obviously this needs to be flexible however, as things often change at the last minute….kids needs to be picked up from school with a bump to the head, one falls asleep just when you were going to do the groceries etc). Trying to get some form of exercise at any time however is important not just for physical health but for a bit of ‘me’ time too. [Read more...]

Why we should let the village raise the child

It takes a village to raise a child? Or so the African proverb tells us.  Whilst this may still be the case in many parts of the world, it is something that seems to be embraced less and less in Western society. Maybe this is something that could be argued as detriment to the well being of our children and ourselves. This past week, I witnessed first hand the many positive aspects of communal family living.

Last Sunday, my husband, myself and our 5 children, along with 6 other couples and their families, set off on a week long holiday down the coast to celebrate the 40thbirthday milestones of my husband and his mates  (years ago they conjured up a dream trip to Las Vegas minus the family, however renovations, babies, work commitments and visions of  ‘The Hangover 3′  saw the trip somewhat change in nature to a family beach holiday less than an hour down the road). Fourteen adults and seventeen kids descended on accommodation reminiscent of school camp. A huge long hallway with bedrooms either side that housed bunk bed upon bunk bed, communal male and female toilets, large kitchen, dining and lounge area and a room out the back for the kids to run wild, became our abode for 7 nights. Why Do We Need Help To Parent Our Children?

Why do we need so much advice on how to parent our children? Why does the modern world insist on inundating us with information for something that surely should come naturally? After all, our parents and grandparents did OK didn’t they? Didn’t they just put their heads down and get the job done without the use of internet forums, advice columns, parenting blogs, seminars and workshops? They used whatever means and help they had at their disposal and they made decisions based on instinct.

There is no doubt there is a definite place for us to trust and rely on our natural instinct to help us make choices about our children. I believe however, that the modern world insists on us placing greater emphasis on educating ourselves, surrounding ourselves with support networks and seeking out help when the challenges are beyond our level of expertise.

Parenting is different today. Our society has been through enormous changes of late, and thus such changes must be reflected in the way we go about our parenting. But in saying that, we do seem to have lost our way recently with some basic parenting principles that need never go out of style. [Read more...]

What are you doing for your kids that they could be doing for themselves?

What are you doing for your kids that they could be doing for themselves? This is a question I have been asking myself with a lot more regularity lately. Mainly because I am a little more tired than usual and suffering a few bouts of ‘can’t be bothered’ syndrome. (oh and I’m just coming out the other side of the first trimester of another pregnancy)! To put a positive spin on ordering my kids around a lot more, I figured that there were probably a lot of tasks I was performing that my kids were perfectly capable of undertaking themselves, and thus I was denying them the right to a pathway of greater freedom and independence. Happy to sell it any way I can! [Read more...]

Morning Routines – Getting to School on Time without Nagging, Yelling, Fighting…

With 3 primary age boys and a 12 month old baby, mornings were not necessarily the most serene time of the day. Despite telling myself that I was not going to yell, nag and spend all morning chasing children around the house with a hairbrush…I would wake up early with the best of intentions, only to find myself yet again, running around the house chasing children with hairbrush and toothbrush, whilst trying to find matching socks that were the right colour, style and ankle length in order to succumb to the particular fashion whim of each child. I would drop the children off at school, sweating now from the last minute dash around the house to find 3 gold coins for free dress day, a favourite toy for show and tell, last nights spelling words, the tennis racquet for the lunchtime lesson and the footy boots for the after school footy training. I would kiss them goodbye, be left with the relative peace of a 1 year old, and find myself wondering yet again what all the fuss was about [Read more...]
