Chat speak, tech speak, short cuts wreaking havoc on the english language? Or perhaps another link back to the caveman? Recently, diet gurus have urged us to turn back time to replicate the culinary lifestyles of those wandering the earth thousands of years ago. Now it seems, our form of communication appears to be heading that way to, as we look to reduce the time laboured practise of writing full words and replace them instead with quick symbols and emojis in order to communicate.
Whilst this chat speak has been evolving for a while now, the take up of ‘lol’ and ‘omg’ by the majority of the population, has required the youth of today to seek more allusive short cuts to bamboozle their parents. So here are a few of the newer chat speaks appearing on the instant message and social media feeds of young people today and a few emoji’s translated for those still a little unsure 🙂
General Speak
FWIW – For what its worth
POV – Point of view
IMHO – In my humble/honest opinion
FYEO – for your eyes only
WTPA- Where the party at
YLM- You love me
RBTL – Read between the lines
WYWH- Wish you were here
Sexting speak
SUGARPIC – suggestive or erotic photo
KOTL – Kiss on the lips
PRON – Porn
IPN – I’m posting naked
LH6- Let’s have sex
WTTP- Want to trade pictures
And whilst many of the short hand smily’s have been turned in to emoji’s, here are some still being used
😀 Big toothy grin
:-X Lips are sealed
:’-( crying
:-p sticking out tongue
:-* kiss
😉 wink
And as more and more emojis appear with every new system update, here are a few of those used to help add meaning to a comment or purely as a way of communicating all on their own.

I have to say, I absolutely adore emojis. I really don’t know how we ever communicated digitally without them 🙂 I use them a lot in instant chat. Though I don’t know about sexting – I think I’ll definitely leave that to the teens! Thanks for linking with #TeamIBOT 🙂
Glad you love them, I must say it took me a while but now I really do use them a lot (and no I am not into the sexting part either!
Thank you for this! Someone had used the loudly crying face on my FB page and I didn’t know what it was. By the tone of her other comments though I had a feeling it was something derogatory. I am a big fan of emojis though. They can add a lot of fun to an insta post etc.
Thanks Renee…yes you wouldn’t be the first person bamboozled by a text meaning!

I love emojis because you can finally indicate that you’re being sarcastic or facetious online. Before that, it was anyone’s guess!
There’s a few here that are new to me in the chat speak, so thanks for sharing.
