Some words to live by from Anne Shirley: Honesty, imagination and a kindred spirit

The other day I was researching  searching being distracted by the internet when I came across a gorgeous quote from the ever so wise  Anne of Green Gables.

“Today is always fresh with no mistakes in it yet”

I love these words and on more than one occasion have used this outlook when stress, grief or everyday challenges threaten to overwhelm. Whether it be mistakes of our own doing, the mistake of others or situations beyond our control, it certainly helps to think of tomorrow as a clean slate.

I fondly remember reading these books and later watching the series on television. Anne’s imagination, her reference to ones “kindred spirit”, her gregarious nature and forthright honesty makes her one of my most favourite fictional characters. I decided to share some more pearls of wisdom with you here. Her passionate love of language and the written word, her creative outlook her loyalty and her wit and wisdom ensures we could all learn something from the very spirited Anne of Green Gables.

“I went looking for my dreams outside of myself and discovered, it’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it.”

“I promise I’ll never do it again. That’s the one good thing about me. I never do the same wrong thing twice.”

————————————

You say you like people to be frank, we’ll I’m going to be frank. It’s your own fault that nobody likes you. Katherine Brooke, you are nothing but prickles and stings! “

Anne: Don’t you ever imagine things differently from what they are?

Marilla Cuthbert: No

Anne: Oh Marilla, how much you miss

————————————–

Mrs Cadbury: Tell me what you know about yourself?

Anne: Well it isn’t really worth telling Mrs Cadbury. But if you’d let me tell you what I imagine about myself you’d find it a lot more interesting.

Whilst often finding herself in catastrophes and “the depths of despair” there is something so refreshing about her outlook on life.

Who is one of your favourite fictional characters?

  7. I never read the Anne of Green Gables series, much to my mum’s disappointment. I felt that same disappointment myself when my daughter never got into Enid Blyton, not even the Magic Faraway Tree! I loved detective stories as a kid so my favourite fictional characters were Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden. They never had anything poetic or meaningful to say, but they were very clever :)

  8. Oh Martine, how I love that Anne Girl! We go way back together. I think Anne’s relevancy will never date. She is the girl I’d like my girls to look up to. She has the qualities that bring and offer so much to the world, not the crap fake people who a lauded as celebrities these days. Deeps of despair with them I tell you! xxx

Favourite fictional character…. Hmmmm thats a tough one. I really liked Katniss Everdeen to be honest, though she wouldn’t be my fave. She was practical yet compassionate and quite real for such a crazy story.

I so love Anne of Green Gables! I watched it and watched and watched it as I was growing up and knew all the words. I wanted to be Anne Shirley! LOL I wonder in the times of Hannah Montanna and the like, would our younger generation not appreciate Anne or think it was dull. That would be sad. :(
