social networks and parenting

Top Posts on Parenting with Social Networks

Last week we had a wrap up of some of my most popular Digital Parenting posts. This week I thought we could take a look at some of the 2014 posts related to parenting with social networks. Parenting today requires ongoing awareness of not only the types of apps, sites and networks out there, but the ways in which they are used by our children. We need to be alert to some of the trends, not merely to spy on our kids or keep a watchful eye on who they are interacting with, but to gain some understanding and perspective,  in order to help us have meaningful discussions with them about socialising online.

Throughout the coming year I will continue to alert you to different social networking trends so you can continue to be relevant in your communications with your children. It is unlikely we will ever keep up with every site our children are visiting, but the more information and understanding we have about the types of behaviours our kids are experiencing online, then the better equipped we will be to help them safely navigate the online world.

Remember there is no substitute for talking to your kids, ensuring they have the opportunities to have time away from the screens and giving them the ability to build self esteem that allows them to get the most out of positive social networking and interaction.
